Dr. John H. Coker Jr. serves on the Board of Directors for the Fredericksburg Symphony Orchestra, bringing a distinguished legacy of dental excellence, non-profit governance, and artistic advocacy to the organization. A prominent retired orthodontist and lifelong champion of regional arts, Dr. Coker completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Oklahoma before earning his dental degree from the University of Louisville Dental School. He specialized in orthodontics at the Graduate School of Orthodontics at the University of Michigan, subsequently establishing a premier regional practice that served families across Spotsylvania, Stafford, and King George counties for decades. Highly respected within his profession, he also led statewide clinical advancement as the President of the Virginia Association of Orthodontists.
Upon retiring from clinical practice, Dr. Coker dedicated his leadership to regional civic advancement and philanthropy. In 1985, he became a charter member and the second President of the Fredericksburg Rappahannock Rotary Club, introducing enduring community traditions such as the annual Christmas Parade Pancake Breakfast and the regional Santa Mailbox program. His broad executive board service spans several foundational local institutions, including tenures as Campaign Chairman and President of the Rappahannock United Way, board governor for The Community Foundation, Senior Warden and a Vestry person at St. George’s Episcopal Church, a board director for the Fredericksburg Area Museum, and a Board member of the Mary Washington Hospital Foundation. In recognition of his massive volunteer footprint and his orchestration of public initiatives like the downtown October Scarecrow Fest, he was formally recognized as a Fredericksburg Difference Maker.
Dr. Coker has left an indelible mark on the performing arts ecosystem of central Virginia. Alongside his wife, Linda, he stands as a founding member and long-time board director of the Riverside Center for the Performing Arts, where the couple personally underwrote dozens of Children’s Theater productions to expand cultural access for youth. Now utilizing his decades of cultural advocacy and structural planning on the Board of Directors for the Fredericksburg Symphony Orchestra, he plays a key role in steering the orchestra’s development, fiscal sustainability, and community education initiatives. To secure their lifelong commitment to the region’s cultural welfare, the family manages The John and Linda Coker Family Fund through The Community Foundation for the Rappahannock River Region, guaranteeing ongoing grant support for local classical music, theater, and social service organizations.
