Full Biography

Ali Dettmer is an active flutist and educator from the Richmond, VA area. She currently holds the positions of Principal Flute with the Fredericksburg Symphony Orchestra and Second Flute with the Lima Symphony Orchestra. She also performs regularly with other ensembles, including the Richmond Symphony, Williamsburg Symphony, Charlottesville Opera, Northern Neck Orchestra, Akron Symphony Orchestra, and others.

Recognized for her technical skill and expressive musicality, Ali has garnered several accolades, including first prize in the 2020 Kentucky Flute Society Young Artist’s Competition and third prize in the 2020 Flute Society of Greater Philadelphia Young Artist’s Competition. She has also been featured as a soloist with the Concordia University Orchestra and the City of Fairfax Band.

Ali completed her undergraduate studies at Carnegie Mellon University, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts in flute performance as well as a certification in K-12 music education. She also received a Master of Music from the University of Michigan. She furthered her education through summer programs at the Brevard Music Center. She is grateful for her time studying with Alberto Almarza, Amy Porter, Jeanne Baxtresser, and Jennifer Lapple.
