Dr. Christopher Newman, MD, MBA balances his executive leadership of regional medicine with an active dedication to the performing arts, serving prominently as a core member of the Board of Directors for the Fredericksburg Symphony Orchestra (FSO). In this vital governance role, Dr. Newman synthesizes his extensive background in strategic institutional management, community advocacy, and large-scale partnership building to help steer the Symphony’s long-term fiscal health, regional growth, and expanding musical education campaigns. His position on the FSO Board underscores a deep personal commitment to elevating the cultural footprint and artistic vitality of the entire Fredericksburg region.
Professionally, Dr. Newman serves as the President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Mary Washington Healthcare (MWHC), overseeing an expansive network of over 40 regional clinical facilities, acute care hospitals, and a multidisciplinary medical group. He completed his undergraduate studies at The University of Scranton before earning his medical degree from the Georgetown University School of Medicine and completing his residency in internal medicine at the Georgetown University Medical Center. Advancing his expertise in corporate stewardship, he later secured a Master of Business Administration from the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business. Prior to leading MWHC, Dr. Newman built a distinguished track record of health system leadership in Pennsylvania, where he served as Executive Director of the Penn State Medical Group (Berks Region) and Chief Medical Officer for the Penn State Health St. Joseph Regional Health Network.
Since arriving in Fredericksburg in 2019, Dr. Newman has seamlessly woven his clinical executive talents into the fabric of regional community development. Before ascending to President and CEO, he navigated MWHC through several years of operational expansion as Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Medical Officer, a dual tenure that repeatedly earned him nationwide recognition on Becker’s Hospital Review list of “Chief Medical Officers to Know.” Beyond his primary corporate portfolio and his critical governance seat with the Fredericksburg Symphony Orchestra, Dr. Newman further drives local civic progress and institutional synergy by serving on the University of Mary Washington Board of Visitors, the Fredericksburg Academy Board, and the Saint Francis Ministries Board.
