Ronald W. Branscome serves on the Board of Directors for the Fredericksburg Symphony Orchestra (FSO), infusing the organization’s governance with more than four decades of executive public administration, non-profit stewardship, and systemic community health leadership. He completed his undergraduate studies in Psychology at Towson State College before earning his Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling from Virginia Commonwealth University. In 1976, he launched a historic professional career with the Rappahannock Area Community Services Board (RACSB), initially serving as the Director of Developmental Services before ascending to Executive Director in September 1983. Over his 33-year tenure as executive director—making him the longest-tenured leader among all 40 Community Services Boards across the Commonwealth of Virginia—Mr. Branscome revolutionized regional behavioral healthcare by shifting treatments out of large state institutions and into highly personalized, local community structures. Under his direct guidance, RACSB built five mental health and substance abuse outpatient clinics and developed 15 residential facilities, including the foundational Sunshine Lady House for Mental Health Wellness & Recovery.
Parallel to his career in public healthcare management, Mr. Branscome has directed massive philanthropic and civic campaigns across the greater Fredericksburg region. He served as the Board Chair and the 2006 Campaign Chair for the Rappahannock United Way, executing fundraising drives that generated over $2.8 million to support dozens of local human service non-profits. His comprehensive board leadership portfolio has included seats on the Mary Washington Healthcare Board of Trustees, the Association for Retarded Citizens (ARC) Rappahannock chapter, and long-standing membership inside the Rappahannock-Fredericksburg Rotary Club. His decades of systemic advocacy have garnered multiple elite regional honors, including the state Department of Behavioral Health Employee of the Year, the David A. Langford Volunteer of the Year Award, the Mount Olive Baptist Church Community Service Award, and special legislative proclamations from the Stafford County Board of Supervisors. Now channeling his macro corporate governance and institutional planning strengths into the arts ecosystem as a trustee of the Fredericksburg Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Branscome acts as a key operational advisor to sustain the 75-piece orchestra’s logistical expansion, fiscal development, and youth education initiatives across Central Virginia.
